Dementia in Latin America and the Caribbean: The public health challenge
The World Dementia Council is hosting a series of dialogues on the dementia landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean. The dialogue series is chaired by Professor Ricardo Allegri, Director of the Memory and Ageing Center at the Neurological Research Institute Fleni in Buenos Aires Professor Paulo Caramelli, Professor of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
The second in the World Dementia Council's Caribbean Dialogue series, focused on Policy, Advocacy, and Awareness is on 25 April 2025. This closed virtual session brings together expert voices from across the region and the diaspora to explore how we can build policy momentum, raise public awareness, and drive system-level change in response to the Caribbean’s growing dementia burden.
The meeting is chaired by Dr Ishtar Govia Founder & CEO of Amagi and Dr Horace Cox Acting Director of Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control at the Caribbean Public Health Agency. Dr Ian Hambleton will open with a framing of demographic and data realities in the region, followed by Dr Sebastian Walsh, who will examine population-level policy strategies for risk reduction and prevention. Avinash Saxena will speak to innovation ecosystems and the role of public-private partnerships, while Dr Carika Weldon will share lessons from building genomics infrastructure and equitable diagnostic access. Dr Chelsea Garcia will reflect on integrating long-term care into national health systems, and John Barnes will offer a powerful call to action rooted in lived experience and advocacy.
The conversation brings together experts across the region to explore the challenges and opportunites in perparing health systems for treatments. The roundtable discussions will help shape the WDC Satellite Summit in Lima, Peru on 13 May 2025.
