Dementia in an era of treatments
The approval of the first treatments for Alzheimer's disease marks a fundamental shift for the field. Alzheimer's is treatable. It is a transformational moment. While the impact of these treatments remains limited, and they are currently available in only a few countries, their reinforces the direction of travel.
Over the coming years, there will be more treatments — disease modifying and symptomatic and not only for Alzheimer's but also for other forms of dementia. Innovation will result in more effective, accessible, and affordable treatments. They will bring greater benefits to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers, and overtime reach more people globally. This is the trajectory the field is on. And it is similar journey to other disease areas that have shifted from untreatable to treatable.
To explore this pivotal moment, the World Dementia Council launched a new project examining the impact and implications of these treatments. The first stage of this initiative will bring together global experts for a series of three virtual dialogues, assessing early lessons from their rollout. The output of these discussions will be a paper capturing key insights and recommendations. Further details of the project will be announced in spring 2025.
